Sir David Wootton was born and brought up in Bradford, Yorkshire, where he attended Bradford Grammar School before winning an Open Scholarship in Classics to Jesus College, Cambridge, where he studied Classics and Law. He trained as a Solicitor with Allen & Overy, the international law firm based in the City of London, becoming a partner in 1979 and remaining till 2015. At Allen & Overy he specialised in complex corporate transactions, most often with an international element.

In 2002 he was elected as a Common Councillor in the City of London and in 2005 as an Alderman, serving as Sheriff in 2009-2010 and as the 684th Lord Mayor of London in 2011-2012, the year of HM The Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics and Paralympics. He continues to lead the Court of Alderman as Chairman of the General Purposes Committee of Aldermen.
