MENSA PEOPLE - Christa's rocking all over the Midlands!

Christa Hugo at the BBC

Musical Mensan Christa Hugo spends her days in the serene world of classical music and ballet – but by night, she’s ready to rock!

Christa is a part-time ballet pianist and keyboard teacher - but, four evenings a week, she lets her hair down to lead a group of enthusiastic amateur singers in Rock Choir, a nationwide movement which has seen fun, friendly choirs spring up in more than 300 towns and cities.

Christa said: “Up until three years ago, as a music graduate and qualified music teacher, I had worked in predominantly classical environments my whole life.

“But my passion was always popular music. I've been obsessed with it pretty much my whole life.

“So, when I was offered a job as a choir leader with Rock Choir in 2012, I knew it was right for me. Four nights a week, I get to stand at my piano in front of a room full of eager amateur singers, and teach them a great pop song in three, four, five or six-part harmony.

“It's such a buzz and we all have a great time every night. And then there's the performances. My choirs and I have done some amazing things in our time.

“Great memories include supporting G4 at Birmingham's Town Hall, joining Roy Wood at Birmingham's Symphony Hall for his Christmas concert, staging our own summer concert at Symphony Hall with special guest Toyah Wilcox and performing on BBC1's The One Show.

“In June we'll be coming together with thousands of other Rock Choir members at the Genting Arena (at the NEC) for Rock Choir Live, with guests Kiki Dee, Kim Wilde and Chesney Hawkes. We've also performed a flash mob in a local shopping mall which was great fun.”

Christa grew up in Wiltshire and completed a BA in music at Southampton University followed by a PGCE at Bath Spa University.

She worked as an instrumental music teacher for many years in and around Wiltshire and Bath, and then moved to the West Midlands in 2006 for a job at Elmhurst School for Dance in Birmingham, one of the top dance schools in the UK which works very closely with the Birmingham Royal Ballet.

She met her partner David in 2005 and they now live in Stourbridge.

When she’s not working or rocking, Christa enjoys exercise classes including Body Pump and Body Atttack, as well as reading and art therapy.

She shares a love of animals with David and they visit wildlife parks and zoos whenever they can. They are also both theme park fans and have visited many in this country as well as in the US and Australia.

She added: “My geekiest trait is probably my love of board games - anything from simple word games like Boggle to "party" games like Cranium or Articulate.

“I tried Settlers of Catan once but it didn't really grab me to be honest!”

Christa’s Rock Choir sessions are from 8pm-9.30pm in Kidderminster (Mondays), Bromsgrove (Tuesdays), Redditch (Wednesdays) and Stourbridge (Thursdays).
