Arts & Science Day Special

A Theoretical and Practical Introduction to the Alexander Technique

by Peter Bloch.

Wilmslow United Reformed Church, Chapel Lane, SK9 1PR

Saturday 30th March 2019, 13:00 - 15:30

Join us for a fascinating insight into the Alexander Technique.

Participants will receive a one hour interactive lecture on and demonstration of the theoretical principles of the AT. After a short tea break, all participants will be offered an individually guided opportunity to experience how they can change their habitual ways of moving by applying the principles of the AT to the carrying out of an everyday activity.

The AT is a systematic method for changing habits of movement by learning to think differently. Originally developed for actors and other performers, its basic requirement, the ability to continue a new way of thinking whilst carrying out habitual activities, quickly attracted the interest of many of the most important intellectuals of Alexander’s time, including Bernard Shaw, Aldous Huxley, John Dewey and an astonishing number of Nobel Prize winners. From the earliest days there was much medical interest in the AT but it was not until recent years that large, randomised studies have demonstrated the remarkable efficacy of lessons in the AT for overcoming chronic back and neck pain and for helping in many other conditions where the way that people use themselves affects the way that they function.

The event will be led by Peter Bloch and he will be assisted during the practical part of this event by several other qualified teachers. Peter Bloch is a highly experienced teacher of the AT, having maintained a private practice and taught in conservatoires and colleges for more than 30 years in London, Manchester and Cheshire. He has worked with people of all ages and from all backgrounds. Peter has a longstanding special interest in the training and professional development of AT teachers, and is moving forward with plans to open a training course for teachers in 2019.
