Surgical science experts to launch Media Faculti partnership

Two experts in the field of surgical science will launch an exciting new intellectual events initiative for British Mensa.

The prestigious Wellcome Collection in London is the venue for the first Mensa Faculti event on March 14, when two world renowned surgeons will talk about the latest research in their fields.

As with all subsequent Mensa Faculti talks, the presentations will be filmed and made available exclusively to British Mensa members.

Faculti - found at faculti.net - is an online video bank of academic and intellectual talks on a wide range of subjects, from science to sociology. 

The Mensa Faculti series will involve at least 12 talks a year, with members able to choose whether to attend the event live or watch the video through a link on the British Mensa website.

British Mensa chief executive John Stevenage said: “It is great that we have been able to work with Faculti to bring this exciting new programme of events for members.

“It is often difficult for some members to get to events such as our science days in person because of distance or other commitments, so the exclusive video links to the Mensa Faculti talks means even more members can enjoy what’s on offer."

The member-only launch event on March 14 will bring you two world-renowned surgeons who have performed several thousand complex surgical procedures.

Professor Tipu Aziz will discuss current research into the role of the upper brain stem in the control of movement, the clinical neurophysiology of movement disorders and neuropathic pain and autonomic responses to deep brain stimulation.

Professor Nicholas Cheshire will talk about robotics in surgery and his work in pioneering the stent graft repair of thoracic and thoraco-abdominal aneurysms in the UK, reducing peri-operative mortality by up to 50 per cent.

With colleagues in bio-engineering at Imperial, Professor Cheshire's team have developed a novel helical stent and helical prosthetic arterial graft, less susceptible to kinking and fracture, and with advantageous fluid mechanical properties.

Both experts are constantly seeking new knowledge to improve diagnosis, therapies and outcomes for people with face, brain and nervous system disorders. Together they will present two exciting and informative talks and will be open to questions.
