Mensa regional officers and newsletter editors met up in Redditch for a weekend of workshops and seminars, to help them to serve the membership.

On the agenda were discussions and seminars aimed at continuously improving the society and the benefits Mensa offers to members.

Volunteer officers were able to meet other volunteers, share their experiences and encourage each other to try new things in their regions.

The newsletter editors meet annually, and their programme includes practical 'how to' workshops to help them learn more about editing, design or writing. For some, editing a Mensa newsletter is the first time they have tried their hand at journalism or design, and events like this help them to learn new skills from professional colleagues.

The regional officers meet twice a year and the focus of their conference is more towards encouraging local activity and helping members to make the most of their Mensa experience. They are also offered training sessions, such as event planning and organising, marketing techniques, handling expenses and regional finances, and people management skills.

Mensa has more than 300 volunteer officers. These range from the society's elected Board of Directors, to regional and local secretaries, treasurers and webmasters.

Officer roles can take up a little or a lot of time, and there are lots of opportunities for additional training and development. We have even had members start their own businesses using skills honed through their volunteer service for Mensa.
