Group recreates first ever Mensa meeting . . .

Mensa LogoA group of Mensa members will mark the 60th anniversary of the High IQ Society’s first ever meeting with a recreation of the event at the same venue in London.

Mensa celebrated the diamond anniversary of its foundation last year with a gathering of hundreds of members in Nottingham. The first social meeting was held on 6 December 1947 – a dinner for 15 members at the ‘Jill in the Green’ restaurant, 21 Romilly Street, Soho.

Sixty years on, the building at 21 Romilly Street is now home to renowned chef Richard Corridan’s Michelin-starred Lindsay House restaurant, and Mensa members are planning a bumper night out this 6 December to mark the occasion.

Organiser Steve Hill from Rotherhithe said: “This will be a great opportunity to experience award-winning cuisine while paying tribute to the pioneer spirit of those first members who started the social Mensa meetings that are today enjoyed all over the world.

“The original group sat down to an intriguing menu, which included dishes names after well known psychologists and IQ test creators. These included ‘Vol-au-vent Cattell’ and ‘Trifle Terman-Binet’.

“I am sure whatever today’s Mensa group chooses for dinner, the evening will be every bit as convivial as that of our predecessors.”
