About RSS Feeds
Whenever you see an RSS Feed icon, you will have the option to "subscribe" (for free) to one or more RSS Feeds offered by a website.
The RSS Feed icons may look something like the new "standard" orange RSS Feed icon (i.e.
but colour may vary) - or an RSS Feed icon may simply include the term "RSS" upon a small rectangular or square background e.g. ![]()
One advantage of subscribing to RSS feeds is you don't have to constantly re-visit a site to check for updates within specific sections you might be interested in - because your browser or Feed reader will do this for you automatically on a regular basis (say daily). So to see if there are any updates of interest to you within any of the websites' feeds you have "subscribed-to" - simply view all your subscribed feeds for latest information in one go by using your web browser (or feed reader) .
RSS Feeds available on the British Mensa website
- British Mensa Puzzles feed - get the latest Mensa Brainteasers and Puzzles from British Mensa
- British Mensa News feed - get the latest public news from British Mensa
Members please note: The British Mensa News feed does not include members-only news - so members will still need to log-in to the Members Area to find updates to members-only news and information. The My E-mail Services option under Member Tools provides you the option to subscribe to receive regular newsletters straight into your e-mail inbox.
How to subscribe to RSS Feeds using popular web browsers
Versions of popular web browsers that support RSS Feeds include:
-
- Internet Explorer 7.0 +
- Firefox 2.0 +
- Netscape Navigator 9.0 +
- Opera 9.0 +
- Safari 2.0 +
If you are using the latest version of these most popular web browsers, then an RSS Feed icon will appear (or light-up) near your browser's address field whenever you visit British Mensa webpages that offer RSS feeds (e.g. British Mensa News or British Mensa Puzzles) .
If you click on the RSS Feed icon you will then see the content of the feed and have the option to "subscribe" to that feed.
What happens next depends upon the browser you use - so you may see browser-specific instructions about how to subscribe (or you simply add a bookmark).
The browser may behave differently depending upon whether you:
i) click the RSS Feed icon near the browser's address field
or
ii) click any of the RSS Feed icons or subscribe-hyperlinks found upon a webpage
but generally, once you have clicked on your browser's RSS Feed icon (the one that "lights-up" near the browser's address field), the browser will take you through a dialogue that asks if you want to subscribe to (or bookmark) the particular RSS Feed.
For browser-specific instructions, please refer to the Help menu of your browser.
How to read your subscribed-to RSS Feeds when using popular web browsers
After you have clicked the option to subscribe (or add a bookmark), you may find that the browser has added the RSS Feed to your list of Favorites (or Bookmarks or Feeds) - or you may find that the browser has added the RSS Feed under an RSS Feeds sub-section under Favorites (or Bookmarks or Feeds) .
Some browsers (e.g Netscape, Firefox) may also add to the browser's Bookmarks Toolbar an RSS icon that is labelled with the subscribed RSS Feed's title - to provide you quick access to the RSS feeds you have subscribed to.
For browser-specific instructions, please refer to the Help menu of your browser.

Extract from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/ie7/tour/rss/how.html
"If the Feed button
in Internet Explorer lights up, it means that the site offers RSS feeds. Click the icon to see the feed and, if you want, subscribe to have the feed automatically sent to your computer. When you click the subscribe button +* , the feed is automatically added to the Favorites Center and to the Common Feed List for sharing with other programs."
RSS Feed Readers
You might choose to use an RSS Feed reader such as Google Reader
- If you are unable to upgrade your browser to a version that supports RSS Feeds
- If you use multiple devices or you would prefer to gain access to your feeds via any web browser
