Brilliant event in Cardiff
04-Oct-11
On 1 October 2011 there were several events held to celebrate Mensa's 65th Anniversary. Welsh Regional Officer Julian Tandy reports from the Mensa Brilliant event in Cardiff.
"Well October 1st turned out to be the hottest October day on record,so it was a good job that the Welsh National Institute of Sport in Cardiff is air conditioned or the Mensa Brilliant talks could have been a very sticky affair. For those who came all reported on having a brilliant day and if you missed it, well you’ll never know how a concert musician can make sweet tunes come out of the end of a 12’ garden hose, nor know how ground breaking The Roar of Destiny Emanated from The Refrigerator. I got up to get a Beer by Judy Malloy was to online fiction.
"All four talks were very good, each different in its coverage of genius and intelligence, from the natural genius of the poet Stephen Duck to the footballing genius of David Beckham, and how differently a composers brain has to work ‘hearing’ so many instruments all at once in their heads to literary attempts using modern technologies to create stories in forms similar to intelligent thought patterns.
"With each talk being very in-depth, tailored to an intelligent audience and lasting about 45 minutes, I’m not even going to attempt to tell you about them as I couldn’t even start to highlight the topics covered - I’ll just say you needed to be there and a big thanks to all four speakers for four Brilliant Lectures."
