19 - 23 July

Games For Life

Join us in the grounds of the prestigious Sidney Sussex College in the heart of Cambridge. Sidney Sussex is a very well-kept secret - whether it is our Nobel Prize-winners, Elizabethan brickwork, charming Cloister Court, the haunting Chapel, exquisite rococo Hall, medieval cellars or beautiful ancient gardens - they all lie behind a rather self-effacing wall of Roman cement.

Sidney's history is an even better kept secret. There is, however, a truly fascinating and entirely unexpected history to be told about a small institution which has always punched way above its weight and which lies at the heart of British history. Sidney Fellows and students from 1596 have made a huge impact on all aspects of the nation's culture, religion, politics, business, legal and scientific achievements.

The college has produced:

soldiers, political cartoonists, alchemists, spies, murderers, ghosts and arsonists as well as media personalities, film and opera directors, a Premiership football club chairman, best-selling authors, the man who introduced soccer to Hungary, the 1928 Grand National winner and, so they say, Sherlock Holmes.

There are the atmospheric surroundings of a traditional Cambridge college with

  • dining in hall,
  • croquet on the lawn
  • and the opportunity to tread Oliver Cromwell under foot.

This year the theme is ‘Games for Life’ and the organisers aim to cover a very wide range of aspects loosely within that theme.

Organised as

MIND

J. Patrick Malone, M.Ed

A molecular biologist of Walden University, has a Masters of Education with an emphasis on gifted and special education. He served six years in the U.S. Navy.

SPIRIT

Father Ed Elsey

Father Ed is an unusual Father indeed and will provide a humorous talk on overcoming challenges and contemplative faith.

BODY

Hilary Hope Guise

Artist, and ancient historian, Hilary will ask who would risk their lives, naked, for a mere crown of wild olive leaves and why? And why were the “games” a veiled form of bloodless warfare?  Hilary works for Florida State University, but has worked for various others including Cambridge. Around her painting and exhibiting career, she is also a well-known NADFAS speaker.  Her post-graduate research (London) was into confrontational violence in Archaic and Early Classical Greek art.

BODY

MIND &

SPIRIT

Prof. Robert C. T. Parker

Wykeham Professor of Ancient History at New College, Oxford, Robert Parker's interests include how the Greeks' thought and behaviour was shaped by their religious beliefs. He studies ancient Greek history from an anthropological perspective, and as such neatly ties together the three Mind, Body and Spirit strands."

LAND

Edward Boyce

A soldier for 36 years. He served in Northern Ireland on seven separate tours, was injured on active service in 1980 and served in Cyprus, Canada, Kenya, Hong Kong, France and the United States. Eddie was promoted from the ranks on joining the reserve forces in 1995 after a long career as a senior NCO in the regular Scots Guards as a sniper instructor and weapons/tactics instructor. A staunch supporter of Help for Heroes, Eddie (with the invaluable support of his wife Lorraine) has raised in excess of £125,000 and has been honoured by the charity for his work.

SEA

Mark Richard Titcomb (OBE)

An assistant director of strategy with the Royal Navy and former Submarine Warfare Officer. Recently having been appointed to the Royal Navy Strategy Office at the MoD, Mark Titcomb was Captain of H.M.S. Sceptre, a nuclear hunter-killer submarine. He has been in the Navy for 16 years, mostly in submarines, serving in the Adriatic during the Bosnian campaign, as well as tours in the Pacific with the US Navy, and in the Atlantic and the Caribbean. He also served as the captain of a minesweeper working in a search capacity off Northern Ireland.

AIR

Jeff Spencer

Jeff  is a senior aircrew officer, whose career has involved hunting and ‘killing’ submarines, and encompassed the Falklands and Gulf wars.

GREAT GAME

Dr Edmund Yorke

A senior lecturer in defence and International affairs at RMA Sandhurst. Dr Yorke will be speaking the GREAT GAME and will be pulling together his chosen strands from LAND, SEA and AIR.
