British Mensa Annual Gathering 2013 - Sunday

10:15am – 12:30pm. Yorvik Viking Centre - £7.15  

15 minute walk

This museum is forever associated with the late Magnus Magnusson. Travel aboard a time capsule to encounter the Norse speaking citizens, see and smell the past. See the remains of 1000 year old houses, workshops and back yards that stood on this very site in the Viking city of Yorvik as it was before the Norman Conquest.

 

10:30am – 12:30pm. Wall Walk - FREE

A leisurely 3 mile walk around the city walls, with lovely views of some of the best parts of the city. Involves climbing steps. Starting from the hotel.

 

10:45am – 12:15pm. Treasurer’s House - £5.50  

15 minute walk

Adapted by a West Yorkshire entrepreneur, whose aim was to create something to house four centuries of history – he didn't know about the Roman road underneath, and its ghostly legacy. Discover the story of Frank Green and the staff who lived and worked there. National Trust members free, please ensure you bring your membership card. Additional tours of the cellar and attic are available after the stated finish time at extra PAYG cost (NT members also pay). Ground floor has steps. There are stairs to other floors.

 

11:00am – 12:00noon. Clifford’s Tower - £3.40  Children 5-15 £2.00 

15 minute walk                                                       

Built in 1068 by the Normans, see the site at which in 1190 some 150 Jews took their own lives rather than renounce their faith. Clifford's Tower was the greatest stronghold of medieval northern England. Visitors can enjoy spectacular views of the city from its ramparts and discover the castle's impressive history. Involves several flights of steps. Not suitable for those of limited mobility. English Heritage members free, please ensure you bring your membership card.

 

12:00noon – 1:30pm. Carvery Lunch - £14.00

A drop-in lunchtime two course carvery in the RBG Restaurant, including 2 carved meats, 1 fish option, 1 vegetarian option, 1 chicken dish, 2 choices of potatoes, vegetables, Yorkshire puddings, gravy and sauces. 2 dessert options. Last orders 1.30pm. Please indicate any food allergies or special dietary requirements on your booking form.

 

1:30pm – 2:30pm. Pensions – an explanation - £2.00

Speaker - Heather Singleton

Heather likens pension planning to a three dimensional game of chess - there are often implications overlapping several areas - different aspects of taxation, income requirements and estate planning. The constant changes to pensions over the years mean that many people already have a complicated mixture of arrangements. In this information based talk Heather will look at some of the latest complications. As well as answering individual questions during the session, if anyone wants to have a longer chat, Heather will sit down with them privately after the talk.

 

2:00pm – 5:00pm. National Railway Museum - FREE

10 minute walk

A second chance to see one of the finest collections of railway engines, carriages and artefacts in the country. Guided by a Mensan volunteer at the museum, you may see parts of the museum that are not normally accessible to the public. See also the royal carriages of previous monarchs. This museum is free, but they hope people will leave a donation.

 

2:00pm – 6:00pm. Mensa Games Bridge Tournament - £10.00

A formal bridge tournament to become the 2013 Mensa bridge champion. This is an individual contest; no partner required. All welcome to play, you don’t have to register separately for Mensa Games to take part. Reduced rate of £25 for all three Mensa Games events.

 

2:45pm – 4:00pm. Ouse Cruise - £5.85  

5 minute walk

A leisurely 45 minute cruise, with commentary. Drinks available on board. Sit back, relax and listen to historical facts about the River Ouse and its surrounding buildings. Enjoy York from a different perspective.

 

 3:00pm – 4:30pm. Yorkshire Museum - £5.50 Under 16 free  

10 minute walk                                                                    

See Yorkshire's past from pre-historic times to the present, including a short film in the stunning Tempest Anderson Hall. View the Middlesbrough Meteorite, the only one kept outside London. A fine building in a wonderful setting in the Museum Gardens.

 

2:45pm – 4:15pm. From Symphonist to Therapist - £3.00

Speaker - Angela Harrison   

Angela Harrison will reveal how the realisation of her childhood ambition to play viola in the Hallé Orchestra has led to new ways of helping people through her music. Now an experienced Music Therapist working in North Yorkshire, Angela will share a wealth of video examples to demonstrate the powerful benefits of music making for those whose lives are affected by illness or disability. Prepare to be moved, surprised and delighted!

 

5:00pm – 7:00pm. Marathon Pub Crawl - PAYG   **  FULLY BOOKED  **

Join Mensa magazine editor Brian Page who has had his arm twisted and will make enormous personal sacrifices to share his expert knowledge of the hostelries of York. 7:15pm – 10:00pm. Evening Meal at Ask Italian Restaurant - PAYG

The Grand Assembly rooms were designed by Lord Burlington and first used in 1732. Now you can dine in this magnificent Georgian building, currently occupied by Ask. Please indicate on your booking form if you intend to join this meal, so that we can book for the right number. Pay on the night.

 

 8:00pm – 9:30pm. Black Magic Ghost Walk - £2.00

York is reputedly one of the most haunted locations in the country. A Mensa member will guide you through some of the most ghostly sites with the spookiest reputations, starting from the hotel. Repeat of Friday evening event.
