British Mensa Annual Gathering 2013 - Friday

10:00am – 12:30pm. Guided Walk - FREE

10 minute walk to start

Please note this is a public event. A 2-2½ hour walk around the sights of York to give a gentle introduction to the city, briefly visiting many of the attractions you may see in more detail later. Involves climbing steps.


10:45am – 1:00pm. Fairfax House - £5.00  

15 minute walk      

One of the finest Georgian town houses in England, dating from the 1740s, this stunning edifice offers much to see, including Noel Terry's (of Terry's Chocolate) collection of furniture and clocks, silverware and ceramics. Named after erstwhile owner Viscount Fairfax, who had it extensively re-ordered inside, including magnificent ceilings. It is Grade 1 listed, but unfortunately offers limited disabled access.


12:30pm – 2:00pm. Sandwich Lunch - £8.00 PAYG                                   

Sandwiches, potato wedges, fresh fruit, tea and coffee. Served in the RBG restaurant. Please tick the box on the booking form if you intend to have this lunch, to give the hotel an idea of numbers. Please also indicate any food allergies or special dietary requirements on your booking form. Pay on the day.


2:00pm – 5:00pm. National Railway Museum - FREE                  

10 minute walk

One of the finest collections of railway engines, carriages and artefacts in the country. Guided by a Mensan volunteer at the museum, you may see parts of the museum that are not normally accessible to the public. See also the royal carriages of previous monarchs. This museum is free, but they hope people will leave a donation.


2:15pm – 4:30pm. Yorvik Viking Centre - £7.15     ** SOLD OUT **    

15 minute walk                            

This museum is forever associated with the late Magnus Magnusson. Travel aboard a time capsule to encounter the Norse speaking citizens, see and smell the past. See the remains of 1000 year old houses, workshops and back yards that stood on this very site in the Viking city of Yorvik as it was before the Norman Conquest. ** This event is now SOLD OUT. 6:00pm – 8:00pm. Young Mensans Pizza and Movie Night - £7.00  

Tuck into your very own 11'' pizza and fizzy drink while we watch a film. There are 30+ pizzas to choose from! On the night we will vote on which film to watch from a range of movie titles. All ages welcome. 


6:30pm – 7:30pm. AGM Registration                                         

If you are attending the AGM on Saturday morning, you will need to register first. The Mensa Office desk will be open from 6:30pm to7:30pm on Friday for you to do this and there will be another opportunity first thing on Saturday morning. You will be required to produce your Mensa membership card as ID.


7:00pm – Midnight. Yorkie Icebreaker - FREE

Renew old acquaintances, rekindle old flames, continue old arguments, and meet new people in a relaxed atmosphere with a few informal events and competitions to keep you amused. The Icebreaker room has its own bar and last orders will be at 11:30pm.


8:00pm – 9:30pm. Icebreaker Buffet - £12.00                                     

A two course buffet including cold meat platter (chicken, beef, ham, turkey), Moroccan lamb stew with pumpkin and pickled lemon, slow roasted tomato and vegetable moussaka, baked potatoes, hot new minted potatoes, selection of salads and dessert. Served in the Regatta suite, adjacent to the Icebreaker. No pre-selection required.


7:30pm – 9:45pm. Galaxy Astronomy - £2.50 PAYG                                      

10 minute walk                  

Visit York Astronomical Society where Dr Jeremy Allington-Smith, from Durham University, will be giving a talk entitled "Finding out what the Universe is really made of". This will be held at the Priory Street Centre. Talks last about an hour. This is a public event and is £2.50 to be paid on the day.


8:00pm – 9:30pm. Black Magic Ghost Walk - £2.00                            

York is reputedly one of the most haunted locations in the country. A Mensa member will guide you through some of the most ghostly sites with the spookiest reputations, starting from the hotel.


10:30pm – Late. Mensa Games Poker Tournament - £10.00              

A friendly game of Texas hold’em poker. Minimum of 80% returned in prize money. All welcome to play, you don’t have to register separately for Mensa Games to take part. Reduced rate of £25 for all three Mensa Games events.
